Cookin’ Up Accuracy

Trey ButlerBy Russ Sockwell
Gunsmith

In all my years of gunsmithing there are three things that are important for accuracy:
1. Proper Scope Mounting
2. Trigger Job
3. Glass Bedding

1. Proper Scope Mounting
Before starting, make sure gun is unloaded. Remove the filler screws and degrease the threads in the gun with Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber. Be careful not to get any on the stock. Degrease your base and all of your mounting screws.

Mount your base using loctite on all screws. When you mount the rings, make sure they are aligned with each other so as to not torque the scope. Cinch down your rings making sure eye relief and crosshairs are straight.

2. Trigger Job
Trigger jobs are very important due to the fact that if you are pulling on a heavy trigger you are going to pull off of your mark, thus being less accurate. Trigger jobs require changing sear angles and spring tension and should be done by a qualified gunsmith.

3. Glass Bedding
Glass bedding gives your gun a consistent surface to recoil against. If you decide to go this route, use what I use, Acraglas Gel. When glass bedding you should always prepare your stock and barreled action properly. I always remove the area around the recoil lug so as to have glass only around the recoil lug. I also drill small holes inside the barrel channel so as to have more wood to glass contact. Fill in all areas on your barreled action that you do not want glass to flow, otherwise your gun will be glued together.

Make sure you mix up your glass properly and spread it in your stock. Cinch your action down and let the glass ooze out. Once the glass gets set remove the excess and leave for 24 hours. Remove gun from stock, clean it up, cinch it back down and leave it for three days. Go sight in.

That is the three most important things for accuracy for your gun. If you do not feel up to doing these three things, we can do it all for you. Happy hunting.
