WEST POINT MARCH 2008March 28, 2008
WEST POINT LAKE IS DOWN 2 FEET, CLEAR & 57 DEGREES BY CHRIS BRACKETT, HIGHLAND MARINA AND RESORT, 706 845 1004
Bass fishing is great. The fish have moved up shallow and are now in the backs of pockets. Up lake throw a 3/8ounce white Spinnerbait in 2 to 5 feet of water. When you’re fishing the spinnerbait look for the stained water for a better bite. Another hot bait to use right now is a suspending jerk bait. Fish this bait with slow twitches and change up with a fast retrieve to see what the fish like. I like to use the Lucky Craft pointers or Staysee in any of the shad patterns. A white Zoom fluke is another great search bait to use right now. I rig it with a 4/0 Gamakatsu Wide Gap hook and then put a small split shot above the lure 10-14 inches. There are some talk about fish on bed so look for a shallow pocket that is protected from the wind. A good sight fishing bait to use is a white tube or crawfish. It's easy to see when the fish hits so that's why everyone likes the white color. Down lake the fishing is similar throw white 3/8 ounce spinnerbaits and cover the water until you find the fish and then slow down and pitch a 5'Senko in the color you like. Come by Highland Marina Resort and talk to Chris Brackett for your free daily fishing report.
Hybrids and striper fishing is really good on the lake right now. Fish are up the river and it's only getting better everyday. Some good places to try are the mouths of the creeks up river and don't forget about the river bends also. Good baits to use is cut/live shad, liver, or small bream. It's always a good idea to free line a 6-9" Gizzard Shad so if any big fish are around you really have a chance at a West Point Lake trophy. There are still fish down lake and the hybrids are in the backs of pockets schooling on shad. Good baits to use are Rat-L-Traps and pop-n corks. Watch your Lowrance to find the fish after they go down.
Crappie fishing is still hot. The backs of creeks in 1-2ft of water is the best place to catch them. Good creeks to fish are Maple, Wedhadkee, and Rainbow. Fish a Jiffy Jig under a bobber to catch these shallow fish. Good colors to use are Black/Chart,White/White,and Green/Chart. Don't forget your minnows because they are working when the fish stop biting jigs.
