Bass fishing is barely fair after the cold fronts this week. And here comes another one this weekend. The bass are trying very hard to get shallow but they get pushed back every week. But be ready with the shallow fish and get the spinnerbaits and crank baits ready. The water will not break 60 but soon. Next week the bass will get on wood, docks and sand pockets. Got to the secondary points and there are fish there if you can get them to bite this week. The bank cover in the coves are good locations and stay in the shadows as long as possible. Make sure to keep the lures as close to the cover as long as possible. Some anglers are catching a few bass up shallow pulling herring and shiners while striper fishing with planer boards and shallow flat lines. Mid lake and up, the will bass cruising the shallows soon. Use the shallow running Bandit 100 or a Lucky Craft Rick Clunn RC1.5 crank bait 10 pound test Super Silver Thread line.
Spotted bass fishing has been goofy at best with the weather. The bigger main lake spots are feeding on jerk baits on any point. With stable weather later on next week we should see spots position to spawn. Next week the spots will get shallow and some will start to spawn. Any kind of structure you can find especially main lake rocks will have spots on them as well as the larger docks, particularly the ones with at least 10 feet of water under the ends. Target areas should be out of the wind that get the most sunlight, and with a bottom contour of sand or pea gravel. This can usually be noted by the presence of bulrush and usually pine trees. For now with the smaller bait fish the spots are feeding on, downsize baits. Use the Mini Me spinnerbaits, Small Yamamoto Senko’s in green pumpkin and get the Zoom Flukes in white ready. Zoom trick worms will start working soon and all white and June bug are favorites. Get some sand Zoom’s finesse worms and use a light Spot Sticker head and use 8 pound test line. Fish the small worms slowly for now in warming coves mid way in the creeks. Then next week spend the day on the main lake. I never fish the lake without a small Bitsey Bug by Strike King. Use any small trailer and the Zoom twin tails are perfect for this jig. Use 10 pound test line like Sufix Elite. Work the areas that will warm the quickest and that are staging areas for spotted bass to spawn at, areas out of the wind with stagnant water, and the back side of wind blown points.
This striper report is from Captain Chuck Biggers, Southern Striper Guide Service. 404-405-8280
Striper fishing is fair and pulling planer boards and flat lines over main lake points with lines out 60 to 100 feet and put the lines on planer boards 30 to 60 feet. Planer boards and flat lines are also working over deep water in the mouth of south end creeks. This pattern should pick up this month. The backs of the creeks have spawning gizzard shad in them. Target these areas for big fish. Planer boards and flat lines are the ticket here as well. Pull the banks and shallow water in the back of the creek. Don't be afraid to fish in as little as 2 feet of water. Bait sizes and styles can vary from trout to herring and they are all working. On the main lake and in the backs of the creeks gizzard shad are the bait of choice in the backs of the creek for big fish. Don't forget the ¼ ounce to 3/8th ounce buck tail tipped with a white fluke. Cast to the banks for a few extra fish. The Dam Store is now carrying gizzard shad of all sizes. There are fish in Balus Creek, Young Deer Creek, Flat Creek and Shoal Creek. Use trout, blue back herring and gizzard shad. The live bait has been producing the majority of the bigger fish on the lake this past week. Cast Super Flukes in white pearl and white pearl/chartreuse combination and buck tails while free lining your baits. Hit the points and shallow flats for your best bet. Night fishing is fair casting Bomber Long A’s and ½ ounce all white buck tails are all working in various colors. Use what you have confidence in. There are some big spots up to 5+ pounds at night and it is just going to get better. The bite begins just before dark and will last until around 1:00 AM. If you are fishing the north end of the lake, work the main lake points. No trolling yet.
Crappie are biting during the day and at night and you can smell all the beds lake wide. Sand pockets, docks and any wood in the water is holding the fish. The green, banana and lime mini tubes will work. Use the tiny 1/32 Renegade mini lead head jig and very light 4 pound line. The crappie are tight in the deeper brush and they will bite live minnows. Most of the fish this week have been about ¾ of a pound with a few keepers mixed in. The better fish will be biting under deeper marina and private docks.
