WEST POINT LAKE IS FULL, CLEAR & 57 DEGREES BY CHRIS BRACKETT, HIGHLAND MARINA AND RESORT, 706 845 1004
Meet Lowrance Pro Staffer, Ken Sturdivant at the Second Annual Southeastern RV SuperShow & Outdoor Expo at Atlanta Motor Speedway, April 18-20, 2008 www.garvshows.com
Bass fishing is very good and the spawn is in full swing and big bass are up in the shallows. The Airways Extreme was a two day tournament this past week and day one it took 27.14 lbs and day two it took 28.4 lbs that's a 2 day total of 56.2 lbs!!! West Point Lake is on fire right now and anyone who likes to beat the banks now is the time to come fishing. Up lake fish are in all the pockets up Yellow Jacket and also in the back of Jackson and Beach Creek. The best way to find these fish is to turn the trolling motor on high and look for there beds. We are using White Zoom flukes and white tubes. White is an easy color to see in the stained water and the fish seem to like it to. Down lake it's the same pattern, fish the backs of pockets and cove's and look for the fish in 1-3ft deep. With the fish biting so good right now any lures are working good and fish can be caught several ways.
Hybrid and striper fishing is great. The striper run up the river is as good as it gets right now and 75 fish a day are common. The big hybrids are biting well also. I am using 3-5inch live/cut shad on 20lb test on a Carolina rig. My main line is Sufix and the leader I use is Sufix Fluorocarbon. Big gizzard shad are still working well but you get fewer bites than you do when you use the smaller threadfins. There are several places to fish in the river but good places to start are the eddies, bends and deep holes throughout the river. Lure are working good also right now. Rooster Tails, bucktails, and Rat-L-Traps are the preferred casting baits right now.
Crappie fishing is great and the fish have moved to shallow water and begun laying eggs. Good places to fish right now is Half-Moon Creek, Whitewater Creek, Jackson Creek and the pockets up the river. I like to throw a Black/Chart Jiffy Jig in 1/16 ounce, rig a cork above the jig 12" to 18". Minnows are working well after you locate the fish and will continue to produce fish year round. Stop by Highland Marina Resort for your free daily fishing report and come see our NEW Tackle & Gift Shop.
